Cadillac Red

This Cadillac ad was found in Life Magazine, March 17, 1961. The web page I got this ad from was http://sip-of-sarsaparilla.blogspot.com/2010/12/christmas-wish-list-1928-bulova-watch.html. This ad interested me because Cadillac is my favorite brand of cars and my favorite color is red. I would totally buy a car if i had the money and the opportunity.  I feel that people creating this ad wanted people to understand how fancy Cadillac is. This photo has a lot of fancy designs and shows the elegance of the car. I do not think that this is too much red, I believe its just enough. Any car freak would go crazy for this one. I just feel that when someone sees this ad, they would automatically be drawn to it. They may wouldn't buy this car, but they would be drawn to it.

  1. The ad is really cool, but the designs in the background are a little distracting from the car. Otherwise this is a good choice.

  2. I have to disagree with the design being distracting. The texture of the background is very soft (looks like a velvet texture) juxtaposed to the smooth, cold metal car; the contrast in textures makes this composition successful. Also the entire ad is in red making the background and the subject one. The content and composition of this ad are successful as a whole.

Otis is right about this design showing "elegance" based on the design in the background. This was probably done by hand and took a lot of time and skill. This ad would be very expensive to produce and that alone demonstrates the company's success.

  3. I like the details of the embellishments in the background but I'm not a fan of the composition. There is nothing to draw my eyes across the ad. I find myself just staring at the Cadillac logo in the middle of the page.

  4. The design is successful. The color theme works by creating unity thought the add. The lacy beaded background and the jewel like logo go hand in hand with the fancy typeface used and the car. All elements in the design say high quality. I even like old cars, especially when displayed like this.

  5. I like the ad very much. I don’t think there is too much red – monochromatic designs are easy on the eye. I especially like bejeweled logo and the wallpaper-like, beaded background. I think this would have served Cadillac well in the 1960’s when status was so important. I like the script font used for the logo and the word placement beneath the advertisement.

  6. When I first look at this ad I think it is very feminine because of the vibrant color and design. However cadillacs are very masculine. However I believe that during this time they wanted to do more than just appeal to the males and try and get some women to want a cadie just as much as their spouses.

  8. I too love Cadillacs (however i cannot afford one)...I like the background, it reminds me of a red bandanna...and the car, of course is beautiful...I would have to disagree though with a lot of people, I do feel like there is too much red...red, in my opinion is such a strong color...Its a great ad though!

  9. “I just feel that when someone sees this ad, they would automatically be drawn to it.” – You are right. This ad this is definitely captivating. It is simple, but it was able to relay the message that the brand wanted to impart –the Caddy is elegant, stylish, and classy! [Carson Wininger]
